May and the beginning of summer are the prime times for planning vacations. But while you are choosing a hotel, burglars are also “planning” their work. Statistics show that the peak of residential burglaries occurs precisely during mass vacation periods.

How can you leave for a holiday with peace of mind? We have prepared a checklist to help turn your apartment into an impenetrable fortress.

1. Check the Reliability of Your Locks (The Two-Mechanism Rule)

Experienced locksmiths know: a single lock, no matter how expensive, is a risk.

  • Two types of locks: Ideally, your door should have two different locking systems — for example, a lever lock (mortise) and a cylinder lock. They have different opening principles, requiring twice the time and specific tools for a burglar to bypass.
  • Security Class: Ensure your locks are Grade 3 or 4 (high security). If your lock hasn’t been changed since the building was constructed, it might be time to upgrade to a modern model with anti-bumping and anti-picking protection.

2. Protect the Cylinder’s “Weak Spots”

If you have a cylinder lock, check if the cylinder (the “heart” of the lock) protrudes more than 2–3 mm from the door surface.

  • Escutcheons (Protective Covers): Install a hardened security escutcheon. It prevents a burglar from snapping, drilling, or pulling out the cylinder. This is an affordable upgrade that significantly complicates a break-in attempt.

3. The “Lived-In” Effect

Thieves often “scout” apartments by watching windows in the evening and checking mailboxes.

  • Light Timers: Use smart plugs or simple timers to turn on a lamp in the living room for a few hours every evening.
  • Mailbox: Ask neighbors or friends to collect your mail and flyers. An overflowing mailbox is a clear sign that the owners have been away for a long time.

4. Social Media is Your Enemy

As tempting as it is to share photos of your tickets or a sunset from your hotel window, do not do it until you return.

  • A post saying “Finally at the airport!” is a direct signal to burglars that they have at least a week of uninterrupted time.
  • Adjust your profile privacy or simply post your vacation stories after you are safely back home.

5. Windows and Balconies (Especially for 1st, 2nd, and Top Floors)

A plastic window left in “ventilation mode” can be opened with a simple screwdriver in 10 seconds.

  • Window Locks: Before leaving, close all windows using special locking blockers or install anti-burglar hardware.
  • Do not leave ladders or other climbable objects on your balcony or near the house.

6. Check Your Insurance and Alarm System

  • If you have an alarm system, test the sensors and ensure your subscription with the security firm is paid in advance.
  • Even a simple “Secured by…” sticker can make a casual burglar choose a different, easier target.
